If you’re like me … you probably freaked out a bit … when Google announced yesterday that they were closing down Google Reader.
So, after my melt down … I decided to find a solution that could meet OUR needs!
Let me explain how Google Reader works … just in case a few of you aren’t familiar with it.
With Google Reader … you add blogs that you like .. and instead of visiting the blogs everyday … you log in to Google Reader and if they’ve posted new content …. it’s there for you. If you’re a major blog hopper .. it’s a fantastic tool! I have a bunch of quilting blogs I check out ..even though I’m not currently quilting.
So, for those of you that are losing your Google Reader account … I’ve found a couple solutions.
- My first solution is easy … if you want to stay aware of what My Chic n Scratch is doing .. I post everything from my blog & MORE on my Facebook Page. (If you don’t have a Facebook account and need help I can help you set it up in a matter of minutes.)
- Feedly – This service is much like Google Reader and the great thing is if you sign up now .. you can transfer your content from reader.
- Bloglovin – Same .. works just like Google Reader and if you sign up now .. you can transfer your feeds from Google.
I’ve signed up for both of those this morning … if I find that I like one better than the other .. I’ll be sure to let you know.
I hope you find this information helpful!!
Have a great day!
I’ve used Bloglovin’ for over a year and find it fairly easy to use. You get one email a day with updates of the blogs you are following. Or you can go to the site and view blog entries as well.
Thanks Shelley!
Angie, thanks so much for this post. I was in a panic until I read your post and really appreciate all the work you’ve done to find a solution so quickly.
You’re very welcome!
Thank you for the sharing!
I also freaked out yesterday when I logged into my Reader account and saw the message from Google. I’ve used Google Reader for a few years and have over 120 blogs that I subscribe to. I have tried other Readers over the years but always stayed with Google. I’m still a bit in shock—they just can’t do this stuff to old people like me…lol I’m going to try a Reader that I found today—it’s called NewsBlur (www.newsblur.com) It looks kind of interesting so we’ll see what happens. Thank goodness that Google gave us until July 1st to get our stuff figured out. It’s going to take me that long to at least accept the fact that I have to change my Reader ways…lol
thanks so much for sharing this info, you’re the best!
U can sign a petition to help keep it going. If u want the info I can share it, just let me know.
I too have been using Bloglovin’ (reading this post on it to be exact) and works well on my laptop and on my Android phone. Easy to set up, and edit, so happy I didn’t go with Google Reader last year.
Thanks, Angie! I was online today searching for what others are going to do now that Google Reader won’t be an option! Was glad to see Feedly listed here – it’s also on Forbes Top 5 list. Might give that a try! Thanks for keeping us up to speed! 🙂
Thanks for the info – was wondering what to do. Already received a sympathy card from my daughter – although it was probably more heavy on the sarcasm vs. feeling sorry for me!
Thank you soooooo much, Angie. I did have a minor meltdown yesterday. Google had already mentioned that iGoogle will not be available after November, but when I saw Reader was going in July, I panicked. I really appreciate the research you did and it is good to hear from others who have been using the other options.
Thanks Angie, I prefer to get my favorite people’s posts in email subscription. I’ve signed up for the reader thingie on several blogs that don’t have email subs. and there is nothing that messages me to let me know there is new stuff. I like it in my mail box, I can sort through it, delete things I’m not interested in or file them away for a rainy day.
Thanks Angie. I hadn’t heard this yet. Bloglivin works great on my iPad.
I don’t really use the “reader” meaning that I don’t physically go into Google Reader and check out the blogs I follow BUT I DO use feedburner or subscribe to the blogs’ e-mail list…will these two be affected as well???
Katy, rumor has it Feedburner is going away too. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed it does not!!
Thanks Angie for that info. I was not happy that it is retiring. A question tho – I have made all these folders in Google Reader with things I have found in blogs and want to recreate (one day!). Will these transfer over too do you know?
I do not know how I missed this post, but glad I was doing some checking around this evening. Thanks for the 411 – I’m going to sign up for the new readers right now!
